"Dear Family" Letter:

What profession did you choose and why did you do so?

I am an occupational therapist. In 2014 I started my education and since September 2017 I finished it. I always knew that I wanted to work with people and especially children. Ultimately, I came to occupational therapy through my mother, who told me about the profession. So I got informed and did a school internship in an occupational therapy practice.Within a week I was so enthusiastic about this profession that I knew I wanted to become an OT. So I started my education in 2014. In the time I have over 3 years of professional experience and love working with clients. Over the years I have completed several continuing education courses.

Why did you decide to work as a care professional abroad?

I have decided to do a year abroad because I am very interested in how everyday life and life with a special needs child is. I am also very interested in the work of the therapists on site and I would be happy if I can accompany the child to different therapies and an exchange with the therapists takes place. So that I can also develop professionally. I look forward to supporting a family in their everyday life and to support the child in terms of goals and wishes. Another reason is of course the travel, America, the lifestyle and culture that excites me.

Why are you the best fit for a family and what are your specials skills when working with children?

My strength is that i am very patient and empathetic. I look at each child individually and not only at its diagnosis. I am creative and enjoy working with games, handicraft tasks or parcours to guide the child to his goals. The wishes and preferences of the child are incorporated into my work. It is especially important to me that children are praised and the children develop a good self-confidence.But also when it comes to keeping rules and boundaries I can respond well to children. I have experience with the following diagnoses in children: - Autism Spectrum Disorders - Circumscribed developmental disorder of motor functions - Developmental delays - Gross and fine motor disorders - Trisomy 21 - Graphomotor disorder - Sensory integration disorders - AD(H)D - Sensory Processing Disorder

How do you like to spend your free time?

My hobbies are: gymnastics, in the gymnastics club I am active since the mother child gymnastics with approx. 3 years. I especially like gymnastics on high bar and floor. I engage me also with pleasure in the club. dancing, I started dancing when I was 13, and when I was 15, me and eight other girls had our own hip hop dance group called True Joy. That was a very great time and together we had a few performances. The group existed for about three and a half years. In 2019 I started dancing again in a dance school to hip hop, which gives me great pleasure. read I like to read books by John Strelecky and generally books about the meaning of life, now and then I also like to read a novel or thriller depending on how much time I have, I also like fantasy books very much . I like to ride inline skates or a bike and I like to be in nature. I like to go for walks with friends. A friend has a dog and horse with these three I am very happy in nature. I live on the Rhine, which is a river that separates my village and France. A ferry allows to get to France within a few minutes. It is very nice to walk along the Rhine or just relax a bit by the water. I like to be in nature and I love animals. I also enjoy doing something with my family or friends and I like Game evenings. And if time allows, I also like to cook or bake for a change.

How would you describe your driving skills?

I drive a car well and I am accident free. I have been driving since I was seventeen, first with accompanied driving and then alone at eighteen. Since I live in a village it is practical to get your driving license early.I drive a manual car, but have also driven an automatic once or twice. I live not far from the Black Forest and have therefore already made a few trips there, both in summer and winter. Therefore, I have experience with curvy stretches and have also driven from time to time in the snow. However, it snows with us in recent years no longer so much and most paths are cleared. In 2017, I was in Australia for a month and got around the traffic well. I have also been on the road with children in the car, both with my cousins and children I have supervised.

What would you like to tell your host children and their parents?

I am looking forward to getting to know them. A great time together and a good cooperation.

What else should a family know about you?

Dear future host family, My name is Hannah and I am very excited to meet you all, I am very nervous. I imagine it would be great to work on a daily basis, in a country that is still unknown to me, with a nice family that is still unknown to me and with experiences, challenges, moments of happiness and success that are still unknown to me. I have been working in an occupational therapy practice for 4 years and I can proudly say that I have developed professionally. I love to work with children, but in my current job I only did 80% of the work, the other 20% I worked with adults. Some people I have treated for a short time, others for several years. I am also looking forward to you children! I look forward to hearing what your hobbies are, your favorite foods, and your favorite toys. I am looking forward to learn your favorite game and that you show me your world. I hope we can spend nice days together and start suitable games or actions for every season. I also like to bake or cook together with you. I will try to respond to your wishes and look forward to a totally great eventful time with you. I would love to bake my favorite cookies with you at Christmas, which are vanilla crescents. Here is the recipe: 250g flour 80g powdered sugar 2 egg yolks 1 vanilla pod 1 pinch of salt 150g almonds 200g butter

What are some ways you can think of to prevent and deal with culture shock and home sickness when they arise?

When I am homesick I write or call my family, boyfriend or friends. I can handle it well and distract myself with little things.

Important qualities and skill of the Au Pair:

They need to be experience working with 1-2 year olds and preschool age children.

For the 1-2 year old they need to be comfortable getting down on the ground and helping Finn with his gross and fine motor skills. They need to love to read, do art or play music to engage him creatively as well.

For our 4 year old, just be fun and loving! She loves ballet, dramatic play, baking, arts and crafts. So someone who is able to make up activities easily!

Most important things when selecting an Au Pair:

  1. 1) Experience with 1-4 year olds. Mainly important with the younger kids as they will spend more time with him.
  2. 2) Independent.
  3. 3) Engaging with the kids - loves spending time with kids!
  4. 4) Organized and proactive around the house.

List of responsibilities the Au Pair will have:

  1. 1) Helping with breakfast and/or making lunch for Evie
  2. 2) Pick up and/or drop off (one kid - depends on the day).
  3. 3) On certain days being with Finn and taking him on walks, to the library, music class, swimming, playground, gymnastics.
  4. 4) Help with dinner, bath, bed time. So light cooking for the kids and clean up.
  5. 5) Help with random errands to the grocery store.

Most important rules at home:

  1. 1) Clean up after yourself and the kids.
  2. 2) Take shoes off in the house.
  3. 3) Be proactive if you see something that needs to be cleaned.

Post secondary accredited educational opportunities in hometown area:

Au Pair's private bedroom:

It is private with its own pedestrian entrance.

It has its own shower/bathroom, a queen bed, chairs, a pelaton, fridge, sink, kettle, and microwave. So its pretty amazing! Very light and pretty room.

It is by the swimming pool and hot tub so in the summer on weekends we will likely be down there.
