"Dear Family" Letter:

What profession did you choose and why did you do so?

I chose to work as an educator because I love working with children, watching them grow up, and helping them to develop. When I was in Realschule school (similar to high school), I had to do an internship and decided to do it in a kindergarten. It was only a week, but this was the moment when I knew I wanted to become an educator. It was a long apprenticeship, about five years, but I have no regrets about my decision. Vocational training is so long because you have to learn two trades before you can work as an educator. First you have to become a social assistant, which takes two years. After that, you can become an educator, which will take another three years. After all this time, I finally startet working in a primary school.

Why did you decide to work as a care professional abroad?

Because it is a chance to gain some experience and I can experience what it is like to live in another country. I also want to meet new people. And now I have the opportunity to combine all these things with my dream job.

Why are you the best fit for a family and what are your specials skills when working with children?

I am best suited for a family because I am friendly and polite. I can deal with all sorts of situations when it comes to working with people. I am also very flexible and adaptable. I have no problems with new situations and most of the time I can integrate easily and I am a team player. One of my main skills in working with children is that I am very patient and relaxed. I am very calm and empathically and I think that these are also main reasons that I am good at working with children.

How do you like to spend your free time?

In my free time, I love to listen to music and make music myself (I play guitar, bass guitar and a bit of ukulele). I am also into sports. Twice a week I play badminton in a sports club and do sports at home about five times a week. I enjoy going to concerts and festivals. I also play in a band. And for the rest of my free time, I meet with friends or watch movies and sometimes play video games.

How would you describe your driving skills?

I am a careful driver. I live in a small town and drive there most of the time. But I also drive long distances to visit my brothers. I have driving experience in cities, on highways, country roads and in all kind of weathers, for example rain, snow, fog and even ice. But I would not recommend driving on frozen roads. I often drive around with people in my car because most of my friends do not have a car yet.

What would you like to tell your host children and their parents?

After completing my vocational training, I started working in a primary school. I worked there for over a year and looked after about 20 children. I played a lot of fun sports games with them and we also sang a lot of songs and made music together. I had such a great time with them and I wish we can have a great time too. Maybe I can teach you some guitar skills, or maybe you play an instrument too and we can make music together. Did I mention that I play bass guitar in a band? We call ourselves 'InSchwarz' in case you are curious. Another thing that is very important to me is getting outside. There is no better way to learn things than to go outside and see them with your own eyes. I hope we can experience a lot of the world together. I am very excited to meet you and hope we will have a great time.

What else should a family know about you?

I have a strong protanopia. It's a kind of color blindness and before you ask, I can still see colors. I just have difficulties keeping a few colors apart.

What are some ways you can think of to prevent and deal with culture shock and home sickness when they arise?

I never had homesickness, we will see.

Important qualities and skill of the Au Pair:

They need to be experience working with 1-2 year olds and preschool age children.

For the 1-2 year old they need to be comfortable getting down on the ground and helping Finn with his gross and fine motor skills. They need to love to read, do art or play music to engage him creatively as well.

For our 4 year old, just be fun and loving! She loves ballet, dramatic play, baking, arts and crafts. So someone who is able to make up activities easily!

Most important things when selecting an Au Pair:

  1. 1) Experience with 1-4 year olds. Mainly important with the younger kids as they will spend more time with him.
  2. 2) Independent.
  3. 3) Engaging with the kids - loves spending time with kids!
  4. 4) Organized and proactive around the house.

List of responsibilities the Au Pair will have:

  1. 1) Helping with breakfast and/or making lunch for Evie
  2. 2) Pick up and/or drop off (one kid - depends on the day).
  3. 3) On certain days being with Finn and taking him on walks, to the library, music class, swimming, playground, gymnastics.
  4. 4) Help with dinner, bath, bed time. So light cooking for the kids and clean up.
  5. 5) Help with random errands to the grocery store.

Most important rules at home:

  1. 1) Clean up after yourself and the kids.
  2. 2) Take shoes off in the house.
  3. 3) Be proactive if you see something that needs to be cleaned.

Post secondary accredited educational opportunities in hometown area:

Au Pair's private bedroom:

It is private with its own pedestrian entrance.

It has its own shower/bathroom, a queen bed, chairs, a pelaton, fridge, sink, kettle, and microwave. So its pretty amazing! Very light and pretty room.

It is by the swimming pool and hot tub so in the summer on weekends we will likely be down there.
